01/20: Match Point
Cole:
Oh no..Woody Allen's directing another movie?? And it's a crime caper??
Yeah it is!
Woody Allen's back, baby! That's all I have to say about 'Match Point,' except that he does it extremely unlike a Woody Allen movie. Match Point is a thriller, a mystery, and so much more. Besides his name and the antique type credits that appear before and after the film, you wouldn't know it's him. And judging by the type of stuff he's put out since 1989's Crimes and Misdemeanors, that's a good thing.
Scarlett Johansson appears (magnificently) in her second major role since her breakout in 2003's 'Lost in Translation,' ('The Island' is the other, but that doesn't really count,) but she comes out with a passion. My jaw was dropped the entire span of the movie, stunned by her performance. Its a travesty that she wasnt nominated for an Oscar, although this years supporting cast is very solid (she did get a Globe nod.) Jonathan Rhys Meyers comes out in his first leading role with a very strong performance that should lead him to bigger and better things in years to come. (He won a Globe for Best Performance in a TV Movie as Elvis.) The rest of the ensemble cast accompanies Johansson and Rhys Meyers excellently.
The story is set in London, England, with a new guy, Chris Wilton (Rhys Meyers,) coming to town. We see hes a tennis coach, and he gets the coveted job at the club, teaching the upper-class of London to maximize their skills of the recreational sport. Among the people is Tom Hewitt (Goode), who he quickly becomes friends with. They find a common ground in classical music and opera, and quickly fall in love..(oh wait, wrong movie..) They start to socialize outside of tennis and soon Rhys Meyers starts to fall for his sister (Mortimer.) They quickly fall in love, spending every last second together and Chris finds the hearts of his lovers parents (Cox and Wilton.)
Everythings perfect and theres nothing that can get in their way. Oh wait, isnt Scarlett Johansson in this? Yep. During their first exchange of words Rhys Meyers is asked by Johansson if he would be up for played table tennis at the rate of 1000 pounds a game, to which he quickly replies, what have I walked into? She serves and he kills it right back at her. What did I walk into? she says. Thats what we are left wondering the rest of the film. From their first encounter over the weekend at their significant others parents countryside home, (yeah, shes dating his girlfriends brother,) until his cancellation of the relationship, youre in for a treat.
Great acting, a nice Academy Award Nominated script, and a visually beautiful film which captures the heart of London and the magnificence of the outdoors in England make this a must see.
