05/30: The Strangers
Cole:
Cole: I was so scared during this!
Bobby: Talk about unwelcome house guests!
Genre: Horror, Thriller
Running Time: 90 min
MPAA Rating: Rated R for violence/terror and language.
Directed By: Bryan Bertino
Starring: Liv Tyler, Scott Speedman
The state of modern horror cinema is fairly bleak. Between the contrived torture porn sequels to poor Japanese retreads, the past few years have offered little original for scare-seekers. The latest horror film with a provocative trailer is The Strangers, and like any good scary flick its allegedly inspired by true events. Instead of murderous tapes or cell phones though, or wronged cancer patients out for revenge, the antagonists in this one are just a bunch of random teens that attack on a whim. Such a motive keeps the film grounded in realism, along with making it one of the scariest films in recent memory.
Liv Tyler, suddenly the star of the summer (this along with), appears here to try out her best screams alongside Scott Speedman. The two play a couple facing an awkward relationshipand three youths who are terrorizing them. From there its a simple game of cat-and-mouse between the two groups. Simplistic yes, but it works and keeps with the realistic tone of the film.
The lack of motive paradoxically both helps and hurts the movie. On the one hand, its refreshing to see someone killing dopey middle-agers just because they can. However, it almost makes the film seem directionless as a result. Nevertheless, the film is not without scares, and with a running time of barely 80 minutes it packs them in quite nicely. Horror acting seems to be hit or miss with the best performances only barely reaching good, and Tyler and Speedman are about average. Theres only so much you can do with yelling and cowering in fear. Maybe this film will inspire young filmmakers everywhere to push the genre, though something tells me this is the first in a soon-to-be dull line of similar movies.
