06/06: You Don't Mess With the Zohan
Cole:
Cole: I probably would mess with the Zohan.
Bobby: I actually laughed during this. Seriously.
Genre: Comedy
Running Time: 110 min.
MPAA Rating: Rated PG-13 for crude and sexual content throughout, language and nudity.
Directed By: Dennis Dugan
Starring: Adam Sandler, John Turturro, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Rob Schneider, Nick Swardson
There was a time when Adam Sandler was the king of the comedic mountain. Everything he produced was pure gold and no one questioned anything. Unfortunately, his last few films have been complete crap, while other people (Judd Apatow most notably) have risen to take his place. But what if Sandler somehow teamed with Apatow? We could have a funny on our hands, which is sort of the case with You Dont Mess With the Zohan. The two collaborated on the script way back in 2000 (along with Robert Smigel, known for his work on SNL and Late Night with Conan OBrien), and parts of that original script have become Zohan. The film follows Sandlers breed of stupid comedy to a tee, but parts actually work and the film provides a good deal of laughs.
Zohan (Sandler) is a counter terrorism agent in Israel, but his true passion is cutting and styling hair. Obviously this dream is quashed in his homeland, so his only option is to fake his death during a fight with terrorist the Phantom (John Tuturro) and escape to New York. From there, the rest is hummus and disco jokes.
Like most Sandler films his old SNL buddies pop up everywhere in roles. Look, theres Chris Rock as a Jamaican cab driver! Look, theres Rob Schneider as a Palestinian cab driver! Look, theres Kevin Nealon as, um, a white guy! Rounding out the cast is Emmanuelle Chriqui as a Palestinian salon owner, which doesnt work at all. Most of the casting in this film is completely off and diminishes the quality of the end product. But hey, theres Michael Buffer (that guy who always says Lets get ready to rumble! in a really cool voice) as an evil businessman!
Hey, I get it. This movie is supposed to be stupid. I understand that, and for that reason I laughed a lot. Theres something about Sandler as an Israeli humping an elderly woman while showering her in water and licking shampoo off of her that gets me every time. The repeated riffs on Middle Eastern culture grow extremely stale, but theres still enough comic gold here to last for a while. Is it Sandlers best? Far from it. Is it his best of the decade? Maybe, since his decade has included Mr. Deeds and Click. Go see it for Sandler, stay for the penis jokes.
