06/13: The Happening
Cole:
Cole: Shyamalan's best since Lady in the Water!
Bobby: Complete crap.
Genre: Drama, Sci-Fi
Running Time: 91 min.
MPAA Rating: Rated R for violent and disturbing images.
Directed By: M. Night Shyamalan
Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel, John Leguizamo
For film critics there is the eternal dilemma: to spoil, or not to spoil. The problem is exacerbated when dealing with filmmakers who pride themselves on twist endings, namely M. Night Shyamalan. The writer-director has developed his own cinema cottage industry built on the twist endings. Some love it, most should hate it. Massive critical and commercial success with The Sixth Sense has allowed him to keep making films that keep the audience guessing. His latest is The Happening, which the trailers proudly proclaim as his first R-rated feature! With the new rating comes increased blood and carnage, though perhaps he should have used it to further his storytelling elements. This film is without a doubt the worst in his canon, and he drags favorites Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel down with him.
Wahlberg stars as a science teacher who just cant seem to get his kids to care about disappearing bees and other topics. Hes having problems with his distant wife Deschanel, and to make matters worse a terrible plague is sweeping across the American Northeast and driving people to kill himself. His only solution is to escape into rural Pennsylvania and wait for Shyamalans twist ending.
The film surprises on a number of levels, including an awful performance from the usually above average Wahlberg, and the story that breaks a number of Shyamalans traditions. In it he opts for a pseudo-political message in favor of his usual supernatural surprise, a choice that probably hurts the film more than anything. Though he was able to buck the norm and move in another direction, he shows that maybe he should stick to his trusty bag of tricks. The Happening fails on nearly every unbreakable level, and I hope viewers can trust their sixth sense and read the signs to avoid this one.
